Marie Cheatham, 94, died Dec. 13, in Longview, Texas. John J. Helble, 84, died Nov. 20 in Aldie, Va. Helble was a Foreign Service officer whose overseas posts included Puerto la Cruz, Saigon, Hue, Kuala Lumpur and Dhaka. Malvin joined the Foreign Service, and his overseas posts included Muscat, Oman and Djibouti. He earned a Ph.D. from USC in 1978. He served as deputy chief of mission and charg daffaires in Reykjavik, was counselor for Political-Military Affairs in Ankara, and also served as a political advisor to the U.S. and NATO Atlantic Commands and two chiefs of Naval Operations at the Pentagon. She was also passionate about French haute cuisine, introducing the Americans at post to one of Frances leading chefs, Paul Bocuse, while they worked on issuing hundreds of work visas to young French chefs heading to Florida to staff Bocuses restaurants at Disneyworld. He helped draft the alliances brief for the Helsinki Conference, which would guarantee free movement of printed matter and ideas across the Iron Curtain.
